So I’m slightly obsessed with Tolkien’s beautiful Elvish languages, Sindarin (common Elvish, used in the LOTR movies) and Quenya (High Elvish), and I thought it would be fun to translate your names (or your favourites) into their Elvish equivalent.
I’ll then show you how it looks in Tengwar, the Elvish script.
For example, [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] means ‘great queen’ and my username, Alatari, is Quenyan for ‘great queen’. So [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]'s Quenya name would be Alatari alat- pref. large, great -tári noun. queen, used especially of [name_f]Varda[/name_f]
Alatari in Tengwar:
Another example - [name_f]Orla[/name_f] means ‘golden princess’ and Glauríel is Sindarin for ‘golden princess’ glaur - name. golden light -riel - name. princess
Glauríel in Tengwar:
So if you’d like to find out what your favourite name or combo is in Elvish, share it here and I’ll do my best to work some magic! !
EDIT: Since this has got so much attention (wow! yay) I just wanted to make an important disclaimer: I am not fluent in either of these languages. So, try as I might, I may break a few grammatical rules when putting these names together (especially Sindarin, it’s super complicated ) so please don’t take this as 100% accurate Elvish names, or Tolkien will be rolling in his grave!
Ooh this is cool! Would it be totally self-centred to ask for [name_f]Leanne[/name_f]?
(Sidenote: I’m not sure why nb lists the meaning as “lion-man”, it’s a combination of [name_u]Lee[/name_u] + [name_u]Anne[/name_u] so I’d say the meaning is more like “meadow + grace”.)
I love Elvish so much!!
I’d love it if you could do this with my name and/or [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] please!
(and if it isn’t too much trouble, it’d cool to see my niece’s!)
[eta: if you can only do one or two, I understand, as I know you have a lot!!! in order of what I’d like to see most: my niece (Aurora / Aurora Bella if adding middles is easier!), me (Ash or Ashley if you need), Ruby. thank you so, so, so much in advance, I’m so excited also, I know finding specific meanings is more challenging, so feel free to stretch whatever you need to make it easier for you!! hope you’re having a lovely day!]
