When you think of the name Isaac - what initially springs to mind?

My partner and I have very different thoughts on the name [name]Isaac[/name] and exactly what kind of character comes to mind. I’m curious as to what you guys think of it.

Strong? Handsome? Religious? Ugly?

I think it’s a strong but approachable and common enough name. [name]Ike[/name] can be a nice nn, too.

It’s a very handsome name. Someone smart and maybe a bit of a rebel, but that’s probably because it’s my cousin’s name.

I usually think religious. I do think it’s very handsome and will age well.

My train of thought is probably

  1. Religious
  2. ‘He who laughs’ meaning is so nice
  3. Wish I liked the name
  4. Maybe I could deal with [name]Ike[/name]/[name]Zac[/name] as great nns

Haha that’s it. There’s something about [name]Isaac[/name] that seems gross to me, but I wish I liked it because it’s so, just great. Great meaning, great background, great nns. I can’t decide if the double A is awesome or strange. I just don’t imagine a likable person. Maybe I need to meet a new [name]Isaac[/name].

I think religious. [name]Isaac[/name] itself = evangelical [name]Christian[/name]. [name]Yitzhak[/name] = religious Jew of the conservative/orthodox stripe.

I think of the meaning, it’s just wonderful!

Well, first I think of [name]Abraham[/name] and [name]Issac[/name]–which doesn’t lead to good things. I get to someone who is strong through trauma.

But right after that, I think of [name]Issac[/name] [name]Hayes[/name] and Itzhak Perlman, so I get a musical vibe.

And I also think of [name]Issac[/name] Asimov, so an intellectual association is there too.

I think of one of my little cousins. He’s a rebel and defiles all rules. Doesn’t listen and is a huge pain. Though, I still think that [name]Isaac[/name] is a great name for someone else’s baby.

I love it! I think of a genuinely likeable guy that loves to laugh. Probably do to [name]Isaac[/name]'s meaning, haha. I find [name]Isaac[/name] smart, down-to-earth, approachable, fun, someone everyone likes. A good student, a kind, loving husband, a great dad, the fun, favorite grandpa. I would love to meet an [name]Isaac[/name]. I know it’s Biblical, and for me that’s half the appeal, but that’s not my first thought. Although the Biblical [name]Isaac[/name] was a great character, so that probably just adds to my good image of an [name]Isaac[/name].

Good luck!

I like it a lot, it tends to stay on our list (but not top spot because the US/AUS divide means we disagree about pronunciation).

[name]Yitzhak[/name] - Orthodox Jew or a not-necessarily-religious Israeli.
[name]Isaac[/name] - A lot of the ones I know are Reform/Masorti Jews but it’s also comfortable for use by/among Christians. They don’t seem to find it difficult to say or deal with.

It isn’t as cool or popular as [name]Jacob[/name]/[name]Jake[/name].
It isn’t as heavy or generally astonishing as [name]Ezekiel[/name]/[name]Nehemiah[/name]
It isn’t hard to explain.
It has a longer arc of common English-speaking use than [name]Noah[/name] or [name]Elijah[/name] so it feels less of-a-time.

Basically it rides along in a middling spot and I sort of really like that.

sir isaac newton! first thing that pops in my head…

[name]Love[/name] [name]Isaac[/name]… I just love the meaning! [name]One[/name] of my favorite boy names!!!

Is it embarassing to admit that I think of the oldest [name]Hanson[/name] brother? (awkward)

[name]Isaac[/name] doesn’t do it for me like some of the other religious choices do, however I do love the meaning of it! (I personally feel it seems a bit heavy, but that might be what others perceive as strong-sounding? I tend to like less masculine boy names).
I have a friend with a new baby [name]Isaac[/name] so that is my newest association with the name, and he is quite adorable. I think it works really nicely for young boys and would grow up to sit well as an adult name, with maybe a period where ‘[name]Zac[/name]’ the teenager doesn’t want to be taken too seriously and tries on his nn for a stretch. Lol. I hope that made sense? Not my style but I think it works well, and has a few nice nn options. =]

LOL…No. Until recently, that is the only association I had with the name. Now, I have a coworker named [name]Isaac[/name], so that is what I think of. I never used to be a big fan of the name, but meeting one has changed my perspective on the name. The [name]Isaac[/name] I know is a genuinely nice guy. Smart and a bit of a rebel (not in a bad way).

I really like it, but I’m religious. Actually, I’m considering [name]Zachary[/name] [name]Isaac[/name], which would mean “the [name]Lord[/name] has remembered laughter.”
