You get an Elvish name. YOU get an Elvish name. You all get Elvish names!

tolkien will be fine, this is fun!

between all the names/nicknames i go by, i’ll just go with two meanings, whichever works as a name?? my given name means “heal”, but i have this whole thing with lions?

Hi! I’d love it if you could do [name_u]Ellery[/name_u], meaning cheerful. It’s also a neutral name, so not girl or boy. Thank you so much!

I love Elvish, it looks and sounds so beautiful! Tolkien was just brilliant.
If you have the time I’d love to see what [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] would be.
Thank you for doing this!

Interesting idea! [name_f]My[/name_f] name’s [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], which means “gift of [name_f]Isis[/name_f].” [name_f]Isis[/name_f] is a goddess and her name means “(she of the) throne,” so… “[name_u]Gift[/name_u] of the throne”? “[name_f]Queen[/name_f]’s gift”? Not sure how to go about that, but I’ll leave it up to you if you want to try it. Thank you!

Ahh, this is brilliant! [name_m]Can[/name_m] you do [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_u]Eden[/name_u]?

If you’re not too busy could you do [name_f]Patricia[/name_f]?

This is so cool! If you have the time, could you do [name_m]Wilson[/name_m] [name_m]Cannon[/name_m] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Bethany[/name_f]? Thanks!

This is such a cool idea! If you have the time, could you maybe do [name_f]Elena[/name_f]? Thanks in advance!

After a shamefully long break from this thread I’m back to continue some translations! University work has been hectic but I’ve got some time now as we’re back in lockdown in Aotearoa :slightly_frowning_face:

@almostactually you asked for Simon :white_heart:

Simon means “listening, hearing”

This was a really difficult name to translate because the Sindarin word for “listening, hearing” is lasta and this doesn’t fit with masculine name suffixes, so I had to mutate it a bit and that’s where all the grammatical rules Tolkien invented trip me up (he was an Oxford linguistics professor, after all  ) So in the end I decided to go for the simplest compound I could make. I’m 99% sure it’s grammatically incorrect but just couldn’t find my way around it!

lasta verb. listening, hearing
-dir suffix. man

Lastadhir - luh-stuh-deer - Sindarin - ‘man who listens, hears’

[name_f]Hanna[/name_f] means ‘favour’ or ‘grace’ which is tricky indeed as there is no direct translation for either of these words in Elvish. I decided against galu which means ‘blessed’, and instead went to mîl which means kindness because I think it sounds more beautiful.

[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] means ‘pure’ and again there is no translation of this word or most of it’s synonyms! The closest I could find was glanna which means clear, make clear. I decided to choose the feminine suffix -wen which means ‘girl, virgin, maiden’ because purity also holds that connotation.

mîl name. affection, love, kindness
glanna verb. clear, make clear
-wen suffix. girl, virgin, maiden

Mílanwen - mee-lan-wehn - Sindarin - ‘pure and kind maiden’

I wanted to do [name_f]Hanna[/name_f] [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] for you as well but ‘god is my judge’ was proving so impossible to translate without creating an ugly word haha!

Hmm, how about [name_f]Kira[/name_f] [name_f]Athena[/name_f]? I’ve seen multiple meanings for [name_f]Kira[/name_f] so could probably go multiple ways with this. Throne in Russian, lord/ruler in Greek, beam of light in Hindi/Sanskrit, Latin, and Japanese

[name_u]Or[/name_u] you could do 凱倫 if it’s not too difficult. 凱 (Kai) means victory. 倫 (Lun) … you can think of kinship I guess

Also, [name_f]Alita[/name_f] [name_f]Katarina[/name_f] if you got time. [name_f]Alita[/name_f] doesn’t have a description on nb but seems to mean “noble” like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] according to other sites. Based on seeing ar/ara meaning noble and glannawen for pure in your previous posts, I’m going to guess Arlanwen?

[name_f]Kathleen[/name_f], being a derivative of [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], means ‘pure’ so just like the previous translation, I’m going to stick with glanna which means ‘clear, make clear’ and the suffix -wen to emphasise the purity thing.

glanna verb. clear, make clear
-wen suffix. girl, virgin, maiden

Glanwen - Sindarin - ‘pure maiden’

ignore hehehhehe I accidentally hit enter halfway through!

@elanorelle Lilia and Esther coming right up :white_heart:

Lilia, like Katherine and Kathleen from my last two translations, has connotations of innocence and purity via the symbolism of the Lily flower. But to keep things fresh I’m going to translate this one in Quenya instead! I’m gonna go for a name that means ‘lily’. Quenya has a beautiful word for the lily flower - indil. I’ve chosen the feminine suffix -llë because it means ‘sparkle’, and that makes me think of something pure and unsullied.

indil noun. lily, or other large single flower
-llë suffix. to kindle, sparkle

Indillë - in-dyeel-ye - Quenya - ‘sparkling lily’

This one is quite hard to pronounce, and I feel like I can’t properly explain it via text - so I’ll attach a voice recording here for you :black_heart:

Indillë in Tengwar:
indille

For Esther I am going to go along with the meaning of ‘star’ via the ancient goddess Ishtar, because Tolkien’s elves famously were very connected to the stars so there are lots of words to play with here!

elen noun. star
-ië suffix. female Vala (goddess)

Elenië - eh-len-ee-ye - Quenya - ‘star goddess’

Elenië in Tengwar:
elenie

Beatrice means ‘she who brings joy’. I’ve chosen Quenya for you because the Quenyan word for joy, alassë, is just so beautiful. And because -issë is a feminine suffix, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that Alassë actually works as a name on it’s own! Yay for me, because I love this one and I don’t want to change it at all

alassë noun. joy, merriment

Alassë - ah-lass-eh - Quenya - ‘joy’

Alassë in Tengwar:
Alassë

@mea.ola you’re next in the lineup from a post you made from your old account, so I’ll do a couple of your faves that I always associate with you! Mira and Quinn :black_heart:

Mira means ‘prosperous’ in Sanskrit and also ‘peace’ in Slavic languages. I’m gonna go with ‘peace’, because I find the Quenyan word for peace SUPER beautiful. Again, this word works on it’s own because the ë ending is also a feminine suffix.

rainë noun. peace, good will

Rainë - rai-nye (roll the R) - Quenya - ‘peace’

A bit of a tricky pronunciation so here’s a voice recording.

This is one of my favourites so far! So beautiful.

Rainë in Tengwar:
Rainë

For Quinn I’m gonna go with the meaning ‘wise’ or ‘counsel’, and because Elvish is gendered, I’m gonna slant this one masc.

gollor [gellyr] name. wise man, mage
-dir masculine suffix. man

Goldhir - goll-deer - Sindarin - ‘wise man’
