I really enjoy Welsh names, but I for some reason have found it difficult to come across new ones on my own, and finding accurate pronunciations can be a little difficult too. Hey, maybe I’m just bad at searching! I’ve found that Welsh names have such beautiful meanings and oftentimes are quite fantastical and elegant!
Anyhow, with this being said, I’d love to hear what some of your favorite Welsh names are! [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to post as many or as few names as you’d like, and to come back however many times you want! [name_f]Share[/name_f] new names you come across or old loves. If this thread goes a long time without any new posts, do not feel bad about reviving it! I love to hear new names, especially when they’re other’s favorites!
[name_f]My[/name_f] current favorite Welsh name is: [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f], meaning “beautiful as a poem”
Although more modern Welsh names, I really have been loving [name_f]Carys[/name_f] and [name_f]Seren[/name_f] have been flirting with putting them on my list. [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], the Welsh form of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], is a really cool masculine name too (my old roommate had a nephew named [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] here in [name_f]America[/name_f] so it works!). Ultimately though, I think my favorite Welsh name would be [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] (and related name Rhian). The [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m] [name_m]Mac[/name_m] song does reinforce this perception… but I find it so strong and ethereal. It clashes with my last name so not realistically usable for me unfortunately, but if it was then it would be near the top of my list. For boys, I find [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] very dashing and am glad that it’s caught on just a little bit to where it’s not a totally unfamiliar spelling.
@Carys1 has been doing a “Welsh Name A Day” thread featuring some real beauties : A Welsh Name A Day
Some of my favorites off the top of my head:
[name_m]Aneurin[/name_m]
Sulwyn (in my user card right now!)
[name_m]Teilo[/name_m]
[name_m]Caradoc[/name_m]
[name_m]Iolo[/name_m] (probably too YOLO outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m], but I love it!)
[name_m]Siôr[/name_m] !! I absolutely adore him <3 I love the subtle ocean connection (according to the internet at least, it’s pronounced like “shore”) For a girl, my favourite is lovely [name_f]Rhian[/name_f] And [name_m]Ieuan[/name_m] is a new crush of mine!
[name_f]My[/name_f] very-favorite has to be [name_m]Dylan[/name_m], though I’d say it’s somewhat distanced from its Welsh roots so probably not what you had in mind.
[name_f]Dwynwen[/name_f], [name_f]Delyth[/name_f], [name_f]Tegwen[/name_f], [name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f], and [name_f]Eleri[/name_f] are others I like.
[name_f]Eira[/name_f]! It means snow, and I think it’s so sweet! I believe the correct Welsh pronunciation is Ay-ra but I have also seen Eye-ra as the pronunciation, I personally like both but think at least in the US the Eye-ra pronunciation is more intuitive and would result in less corrections
I love Welsh names! I always feel so lucky to find ones I haven’t seen before! Without repeating, here are some of my favorites!
[name_f]Rhianwen[/name_f] (this is probably one of my top five favorite names of all time!)
Hafwen
Dyfanwen
Nwyvre/Nwyfre
Glesni
[name_f]Tesni[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhonwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabli[/name_f]
[name_f]Eiddwen[/name_f]
Annesta
[name_f]Aderyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Iola[/name_f]
[name_f]Derowen[/name_f]
Nanw
[name_f]Tegwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Efa[/name_f]
I don’t know as much about Welsh names as I’d like, since my dad has heavy Welsh ancestry, but I do really love these!
Girls:
[name_f]Awen[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] (I don’t know if I’d use it but she’s ethereally gorgeous… I would love to meet a little Bronwen!)
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] (standard but beautiful!)
[name_f]Mared[/name_f] (I believe this is the Welsh form of Margaret?)
Boys:
[name_f]Bryn[/name_f] (means hill) or [name_m]Brynmor[/name_m]
[name_m]Cadfael[/name_m]
[name_m]Ellis[/name_m]
[name_m]Ianto[/name_m] (YAHN-toe I believe—it’s a variant of John)
[name_m]Rhys[/name_m] (I feel like a bad Welsh descendant but I much prefer the [name_f]Reese[/name_f] spelling to this, but I still love Rhys/Reese/Reece!)
[name_m]Rhydian[/name_m]
[name_m]Taliesin[/name_m] (although I don’t love how it sounds)
I probably wouldn’t use them, but I also love [name_f]Aderyn[/name_f] (I think ah DARE in?), [name_f]Anwen[/name_f], [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f], etc., for girls.
