[name_u]Baby[/name_u] girl is due mid-July and she is proving more difficult to name than big brother, [name_u]Atlas[/name_u]!
Hubby and I are liking a name, but disagree on spelling/pronunciation. I prefer the sound of a-RYE-ah, he prefers ARE-ee-uh.
Big questions are:
Is [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] a modern invented name, or does it have a legitimate Hebrew background? Any sources for authenticity? Not interested in an invented name.
Would you naturally pronounce these two spellings/names differently?
When we chose [name_u]Atlas[/name_u], we liked it for itās ease of pronunciation, uniqueness (not any more!), and meaning. So, a unique-ish name is what we like, but we donāt want her name to cause confusion or be off-the-wall. [name_u]Aria[/name_u] being number 23 in popularity isnāt a total deterant, but has crossed our minds.
Her middle name is [name_f]Claire[/name_f], after my Aunt.
Hmmm [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] does have a pretty sound but as far as I can tell it is a modern invented name based off of popular sounds.
I really like [name_f]Reina[/name_f] for you!
Some other suggestionsā¦
[name_f]Delphia[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f]
[name_f]Bria[/name_f]
[name_f]Vienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Arista[/name_f]
[name_u]Adria[/name_u]
Unfortunately, [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] does look and feel invented to me, even though it does seem to have some Hebrew background. I also would instinctively pronounce it like [name_u]Aria[/name_u] since Iāve seen a lot of people use similar alternate spellings for common names (e.g. [name_f]Nadiya[/name_f] for Nadia). The name [name_f]Raya[/name_f] (rye-a) could be an alternate version with similar sounds to [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f]!
I do think [name_u]Aria[/name_u] is a great choice if you decide you like that pronunciation enough! Although pretty popular, it still feels fresh
Firstly, I have to say that [name_u]Aria[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] sounds gorgeous!
In answer to your questions:
Off the top of my head, I would have guessed that [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] was an invented alternative spelling for [name_u]Aria[/name_u]. However, from looking it up, itās apparently a variation on [name_m]Aryeh[/name_m], a Hebrew male name meaning ālionā. So for a girl, Iād definitely vote [name_u]Aria[/name_u].
Iād pronounce both spellings the same: AR-ee-a
As for the other two, I myself find [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] & [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] a bit too āastronomicalā and almost over-the-top when put together. [name_f]Reina[/name_f] sounds nice, and the meaning ābright queenā for [name_f]Reina[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is quite lovely. I prefer [name_u]Aria[/name_u] very slightly, but both good choices!
[name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] does have Hebrew roots but airs on the side of āmodern invented nameā so I think if you want a clearly established name I would avoid. This feels very similar to [name_f]Tamera[/name_f] Mowryās baby name [name_f]Ariah[/name_f] which has the same pronunciation so makes me believe she is in use therefore wouldnāt be completely off the wall you using [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f]. Iām just not sure on this one Iām a bit confused as to what I think of this name. I like the sound however has some things Iām not sold on.
Looking at [name_u]Aria[/name_u] she is off course more established (of course she is clearly established) and I think [name_u]Aria[/name_u] has a bright melodic sound. I think [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] + [name_u]Aria[/name_u] feel very fashionable and sweet. I love the idea of [name_u]Aria[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] such a sweet name.
I think [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] with [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] is a little astronomical for my liking and [name_f]Reina[/name_f] has never really appealed to me.
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] is definitely my favourite
Youāve had lots of lovely suggestions so count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries
No, [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] is not a legitimate Hebrew name. Itās a variant spelling of [name_u]Aria[/name_u] and has only enjoyed any notable use since the 2010s.
Iād pronounce it AHR-ee-É.
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is beautiful.
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is lovely! I would pn it ARE-ee-uh.
I also really like [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] but itās perhaps a smidge on the nose with [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] - I like them as a pair but it kind of locks you into a theme in case youāre thinking of having more.
What about [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Adelpha[/name_f]?
Iām not aware of [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] being a traditional Hebrew/Jewish name (but Jews around the world have diverse names and I am definitely not an expert in this area). I have heard of Aryeh/Arieh which is a manās name in the Bible and it seems to be fairly common in [name_u]Israel[/name_u] today.
I would pronounce them both like AR-ee-uh.
I really like [name_f]Reina[/name_f] and [name_u]Aria[/name_u]!
Iāve never heard of [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] but i know in Turkish there is [name_u]Arya[/name_u] arry-uh
As far as I was aware [name_u]Aria[/name_u] (are-ee-uh) was the Hebrew as well as Italian meaning lion in Hebrew and air/the type of song aria in Italian.
Personally I prefer [name_u]Aria[/name_u] to [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] I think it sounds and looks nicer. I also like [name_u]Arya[/name_u] both the GOT and Turkish pronunciations
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is utter perfection
I would pronounce both spellings the same ARE- ee-uh. [name_u]Aria[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is beautiful, but [name_f]Reina[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is a close second. Both lovely.
[name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] looks like an invented name and Iād pronounce both the same, are-ee-uh. But I do like [name_u]Aria[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]!
Like others I assumed [name_f]Ariyah[/name_f] was just a modern spelling variation of [name_u]Aria[/name_u]. I would say them both the same. [name_m]Arieh[/name_m] (ah-ree-eh/ay) is a Hebrew masculine name, but the girls equivalent would be more like [name_f]Ariella[/name_f] (Ariel is a boyās name in Hebrew).
Araia or [name_f]Araya[/name_f] might get the sound youāre looking for but Iām pretty sure they are modern/made up names.
[name_u]Atlas[/name_u] has a [name_f]Raya[/name_f] in his class and she says it RAY-a. Which is also cute! I briefly considered [name_f]Rhya[/name_f] to get the āryeā sound.
Agreed about popularity - [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] knows an [name_u]Aria[/name_u], but it still feels new enough to me! And beautiful.
