Following Fantastic Flora, Glittering Gems & Colours is my second addition to the ongoing series. As the name suggests, this post explores names pertaining to sparkling gems, earthy elements and spectacular colours.

I will be linking any similar posts I make in the future, and they will be under one collective. Note that my astronomy triad is unrelated and seprate to this series. I am going to keep the format simple and not go deep into detail. For now, here’s a look at some of the names that I’ve gathered:


  • [name_f]Antimony[/name_f] - F - “a metal not found alone”

Occurs in the periodic table as Sb, for its historical name ‘stibium’. [name_f]Antimony[/name_f] is a lustrous metal, poisonous in nature and harmful to the environment.

  • [name_u]Aoi[/name_u] - U - “hollyhock; sea-green”

Japanese in origin.

  • [name_f]Apricot[/name_f] - F - “early ripening fruit”

A shade of orange.

  • Arancia - F - “orange”

Italian word for the colour/fruit.

  • [name_u]Auburn[/name_u] - M - “reddish-brown”

Usually used to refer to a person’s hair colour.

  • [name_u]Azul[/name_u] - U - “blue”

[name_u]Azul[/name_u] is the Spanish word for ‘blue’. Similar names include [name_f]Azula[/name_f] and [name_u]Azure[/name_u].

  • [name_f]Calais[/name_f] - M - “turquoise”

It can be spelt Calaïs as well, and ‘chrysolite’ is another meaning. [name_f]Calais[/name_f] is also a city in [name_u]France[/name_u].

  • [name_m]Carnelian[/name_m] - M - “flesh; yellowish-red”

It is a semi-precious red stone. Cornelian is a variation.

  • [name_f]Cerise[/name_f] - F - “cherry”

The [name_u]French[/name_u] word for ‘cherry’, it alludes to the red colour.

  • [name_u]Cerulean[/name_u] - M - “sky blue”

It is shade of blue similar to the colour of the sky.

  • [name_f]Coral[/name_f] - F - “coral”

Names derived from [name_f]Coral[/name_f] are [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] & [name_f]Coralie[/name_f].

  • [name_u]Cyan[/name_u] - M - “greenish-blue”

[name_u]Cyan[/name_u] comes with the cute nickname opportunity of [name_m]Cy[/name_m]. It is derived from the Greek ‘kyanippos’ or ‘cyanippus’.

  • [name_f]Emeraude[/name_f] - F - “emerald”

[name_m]Can[/name_m] also be spelt with an accent: Émeraude.

  • [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] - F - “emerald”

[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] is Spanish in origin, and is a counterpart of [name_f]Emeraude[/name_f]. She finds mention in [name_m]Victor[/name_m] Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.

  • Fairuz - F - “turquoise”

It is of Persian origin. [name_f]Fairuza[/name_f] is a variation.

  • [name_f]Fawn[/name_f] - F - “young deer”

The word for a young deer, [name_f]Fawn[/name_f] is also a light brown colour.

  • [name_u]Garnet[/name_u] - U - “pomegranate”

[name_u]Garnet[/name_u] is dark red gemstone that is the birthstone of [name_u]January[/name_u].

  • [name_m]Heliodor[/name_m] - M - “gift of the sun”

[name_m]Heliodor[/name_m] is a yellow gemstone that is a member of the [name_f]Beryl[/name_f] family.

  • [name_f]Io[/name_f] - F - “violet”

Similar names are [name_f]Ione[/name_f], [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Iolanthe[/name_f].

  • [name_f]Iridessa[/name_f] - F - “resembling a rainbow”

[name_u]An[/name_u] alternative to the popular [name_f]Iris[/name_f], it is thought to be derived from the word iridescent.

  • Itzcoatl - M - “obsidian snake”

Itzcoatl was the founder of the Aztec empire.

  • [name_f]Ixchel[/name_f] - F - “rainbow lady”

[name_f]Ixchel[/name_f] is the [name_u]Mayan[/name_u] goddess of moon, fertility and childbirth.

  • Ä°nci - F - “pearl”

Ä°nci is Turkish in origin.

  • Kahurangi - U - “sky blue”

Kahurangi is a rare form of jade found in [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]Zealand[/name_u].

  • [name_f]Lapis[/name_f] - F - “stone”

A deep-blue mineral composed of lazurite.

  • [name_u]Lazuli[/name_u] - U - “sky blue”

[name_u]Lazuli[/name_u] is Persian in origin.

  • [name_u]Lemon[/name_u] - U - “fruit”

A light shade of yellow, and also a fruit.

  • [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] - F - “bluish”

[name_f]Lilac[/name_f] is also a genus of flowers.

  • [name_m]Malachite[/name_m] - M - “mallow stone”

It is the name of a green mineral. The mineral was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the [name_u]Mallow[/name_u] plant.

  • Maroon - U - “red”

A brownish-red colour.

  • [name_f]Mauve[/name_f] - F - “mallow”

[name_f]Mauve[/name_f] is a pale purple colour. It also makes a great alternative for [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] or [name_f]Maude[/name_f].

  • [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] - M - “wages”

This is the name of the first planet in the solar system and a metallic chemical element, both named for the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] god.

  • [name_u]Midnight[/name_u] - U - “the middle of the night”

[name_u]Midnight[/name_u] is a deep purplish-blue.

  • [name_f]Midori[/name_f] - F - “green”

[name_f]Midori[/name_f] is of Japanese origin. It can also be combined with other kanji to form names such as Midorihime, Midorika or Midorihiko.

  • [name_f]Mint[/name_f] - U - “defender”

[name_f]Mint[/name_f] is a herb but also a shade of green. Variations of the name are [name_f]Minttu[/name_f] and [name_f]Minta[/name_f].

  • [name_m]Neon[/name_m] - M - “new”

[name_m]Neon[/name_m] is an element on the periodic table.

  • [name_m]Obsidian[/name_m] - M - “of Obsidius”

[name_m]Obsidian[/name_m] is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth.

  • [name_f]Peridot[/name_f] - F - “child of love”

It is a green gemstone.

  • [name_f]Perlita[/name_f] - F - “little pearl”

[name_f]Perlita[/name_f] is a diminutive of [name_f]Perla[/name_f].

  • [name_u]Rumi[/name_u] - U - “lapis lazuli; beauty; flow”

[name_u]Rumi[/name_u] means “lapis lazuli”, a deep blue gemstone.

  • [name_u]Sable[/name_u] - U - “black”

[name_u]Sable[/name_u] is not only a warm, rich black colour but also an animal.

  • [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - F - “spice”

[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is a shade of orange, and also a fragrant spice.

  • [name_f]Sappho[/name_f] - F - “sapphire”

[name_f]Sappho[/name_f] was a poet from the island of Lesbos, famed for her lyric poetry.

  • [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] - F - “orange-red”

From the name of the city of [name_f]Siena[/name_f] in [name_f]Italy[/name_f], because of the colour of the clay there.

  • [name_f]Sini[/name_f] - F - “blue”

[name_f]Sini[/name_f] is a poetic term for blue in Finnish. Sinikka means “bluebird”.

  • [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] - M - “green”

[name_m]Can[/name_m] also be spelt [name_u]Viridian[/name_u]. The feminine version is Viridiana/Veridiana.

  • Veselka - F - “cheerful; rainbow”

Veselka is the Ukrainian word for rainbow.

  • [name_m]Zafiro[/name_m] - M - “sapphire”

[name_m]Zafiro[/name_m] is also the name of a mesmerizing hummingbird.

  • [name_f]ZĂźmra[/name_f] - F - “emerald”

Turkish in origin.

  • Ānuenue - U - “rainbow”

Ānuenue is Hawaiian for rainbow.
