I saw one post that said “inherently” over a month ago and while I don’t know if that is the right word, I get what that poster was trying to get at which is what I mentioned above.

The tricky thing is, like racism and psychology in general, it’s not always obvious (and why it’s so hard to convince people that racism and sexism still exists). We’re all probably subconsciously biased one way or another but most people aren’t going to just tell the world that masculine&white european=strong&good and feminine=weak&bad, whether it’s because they know it’s frowned upon and wrong or because it’s a subconscious thing and they don’t realize they’re subconsciously sexist and biased. So these people just say things like “you’re child will be bullied” or just simply “it doesn’t sound like a good name on a boy.” But why will a boy with a girl name be bullied but not a girl with a boy name? We all have our preferences even if we didn’t have a subconscious sexist bias so how can one determine if “it doesn’t sound good” had any subconscious sexist bias in it or not? Like how do we tell if someone didn’t get the job because of their lack of qualifications or because of sexism/racism?

Seeing how masculine names on girls is more common among rural and conservative areas where sexist views tend to be more prevalent, I wouldn’t be surprised if the trend itself is in fact in part due to sexism. Oh, I just had a thought: this could be an interesting research topic for you if you decide to continue your psych major! :slightly_smiling_face:

Imo, if someone is going to use the word “inherently”—if they are going to paint with a broad brush—then they better have the balls to tell every single person who likes boy names on girls to their face, that they think they’re sexist.

I don’t object to the idea that some people follow that trend for sexist reasons. I object to someone saying that all people who follow that trend do it for sexist reasons. That is strawman-ing and it’s a logical fallacy.

Well, Idk which post you’re talking about but the one I saw over a month ago that used the word “inherently” clarified that this view was only for people who think boy names on girls is cool and not the other way around. Otherwise, I agree with you :slightly_smiling_face:

If their point was that people who use boy names on girls for sexist reasons are bad, then fine. Obviously. Sexism is bad. That’s not really a hot take lol.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] if my girls list was exactly the same and my boys list didn’t include any feminine choices, it still wouldn’t make me “inherently” sexist.

I get that but there’s a difference between just happening to not like a lot of girl names on boys as a personal preference vs thinking it’s uncool and unacceptable for everyone while boy names on girls is cool and acceptable. Like there are numerous names that I personally don’t like but that doesn’t mean that I think they’re awful for anyone to use and look down on others who use them. Not sure if this makes sense or if this is what the op meant but this is hopefully my last post on this thread for today

Real quick re: [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]— also could never get into it. I love hearing other people say it— I guess more specifically [name_f]English[/name_f] accents— but when I say it, I may as well be saying Papi :grimacing: On paper it’s so sweet & attractive but I just… can’t bring myself to be able to separate. Similar [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] too—everyone seems to love [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] but it feels like spitting fuzzies out of your mouth, like trying to get rid of a mouthful of feathers. So cute on paper and when other people say it, but just not for me.

I honestly have no clue. It’s like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. The names are perfectly suited for me, but don’t like it either.

Amira is one of the most stunning names, as is [name_f]Layla[/name_f]. But since I’m not Arabic, I feel like they’re not names I can use because it would be inappropriate.

I like [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] for a boy, and yes it is because of [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables, [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]. And that’s why I adore [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (another character from the same book) [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] or even [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m].

Ok, here we go:

  1. I adore “girl” names on boys and “boy” names on girls (side note, I’m non-binary and strongly wish people would ease up with gendering, but please don’t be a jerk in replies)
  2. “Unisex” names are so cool and way underused.
  3. I love love LOVE word names (please do talk to me about it)
  4. I wish I could love [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] but I have so many bad associations with the name because of a person.
