Name Rants

i know you can’t own combos…but then why do i get so possessive when i see other people mention combos that i’ve previously come up with?? especially when others compliment them for it?? why am i the way i am :sob:

Ugh, I’ve had so many crises like that! They are the worst! All of a sudden you just start questioning everything, like “well if I don’t like this name, how can I go on liking all the rest?!”

I know this is suspiciously specific but it irks me so much when people say that if the first and second child share an initial, the third absolutely has to share it as well. Like, no. It doesn’t. Pattern matching is debatable anyway, but two names don’t establish a pattern.

And yes, this is mostly because I grew up in a family like that.

Why have I been crushing on so many names that aren’t my usual style? (Looking at you, [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_u]Pax[/name_u], [name_u]Sparrow[/name_u], and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] :eyes:) I mean, [name_u]Pax[/name_u] and [name_u]Sparrow[/name_u] are borderline-ish for not looking weird next to the rest of my names, but [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] or [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] next to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] feels kinda weird to me…but I love them so much!
And speaking of which, why am I crushing on [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]? She breaks like a million of my name rules…but I can’t help loving her all the same! [name_m]Just[/name_m] imagine a little [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] ‘Emmy’ drawing rainbows on her driveway with sidewalk chalk, and an [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] ‘Em’ with her hair in a ponytail, wearing cleats and a soccer jersey, scoring goals and going out for pizza with her team  (Yes, very specific imagery haha but what I’m trying to say here is that [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] is surprisingly versatile and I can actually picture it on a ton of different people lol)

Exactly my point of view on the initials. [name_f]My[/name_f] sisters and mom all have the same first initial, me and my dad have different ones, it honestly comes in handy like when I have to write my initials down it won’t get confused for one of the other two (and I’m the oldest). I think it’s a very unimportant detail to focus super heavily on.

On the other hand though I am very nit picky when it comes to the amount of letters, having 4 kids with 5 lettered names then a 5th with 6 letters would drive me insane (probably again because of how I grew up, we all have 4 letters including my parents). But I know this is just a me thing and I would get over it after a while

agreed!! also this is me with nicknames - i see so many polls about “is ___ too much of a stretch for (name that the nickname makes total sense for)” and i’m just like :face_with_raised_eyebrow: yes, rin can be a nickname for marina?? duh? (random example because i don’t want to be rude to anyone)

obviously i come from a culture where stretchy nicknames are the norm, so i’m a bit biased, but if we can do it i don’t see why everybody else shouldn’t!

[name_f]Imo[/name_f] your name could be [name_f]Maja[/name_f] or Yating or [name_f]Sally[/name_f] or Daphne-Marie or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and you could still go by [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] or [name_f]Flower[/name_f] (also bc imo [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], [name_f]Flower[/name_f], [name_f]Posey[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f], Kit(ty), [name_f]Lilly[/name_f], [name_u]Happy[/name_u] etc sound more like nicknames that can be for any name) or whatever you wanted as a nickname for me :stuck_out_tongue: I know a girl whose name is [name_f]Darya[/name_f] and she goes by [name_u]Dash[/name_u] (Darya → [name_f]Dasha[/name_f] → [name_u]Dash[/name_u], since before people called her more [name_f]Dasha[/name_f] than Darya)

You can also go by [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_u]Sage[/name_u] from [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] or [name_u]Light[/name_u] from [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f]. Your choice

A good friend of mine’s name is [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] and she goes by [name_f]Lella[/name_f]

And in middle school I got called by [name_f]Sakura[/name_f] because my name (still went by my birth name at the time) started with a S :roller_skate::woman_cartwheeling:t3: And many people I know fully time with their friends go by nickname of their surnames (example. Surname is [name_f]Candela[/name_f], goes by Candez)

I feel the same. Both my husband and I come from cultures where stretchy nicknames are no exception. Our children have all kinds of different nicknames on all sides of our families, and I love it. However, I can only really get behind it when the nickname comes spontaneously. I don’t like it when someone names their child a name just so they can use a stretchy nickname.

I’m beginning to fall out of love with my all-time favorite name, [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. She has so much meaning to me, as does her nickname, [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but she’s beginning to lose her sparkle :sob:

I want to still love her, I really do, but the other names on my list just feel so much shinier now. I feel like I’ve worn [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] out by thinking of her too much and I don’t know how to feel about it

That is exactly my take on it as well. Stretchy nn are fine when they evolve spontaneously, but planning a stretchy nn is just weird to me. We have stretchy nn in my family, but they happened because the little ones couldn’t say the big one’s names, so they started out as baby talk and evolved into nn we used all the time.

Also, to weigh in on the initials convo, I have 6 siblings. 2 of us have M- names, 2 of us have G- names, and the rest all have unique initials. It has literally never mattered. Not once. No one even notices.

Still recovering from the realization that I can’t have an [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and a [name_f]Molly[/name_f] :sob:

I wish I was brave enough to use names like [name_u]Vivendel[/name_u] and Alpenglow…twin sisters named [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] [name_u]Vivendel[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Alpenglow[/name_u] would be so cute…just idk if I’m cool enough for them :sob:

I wish my style were more consistant… my top combos are a mess and barely go together, and all of a sudden I’m finding myself loving names like Twelfty & Toby/Tobie for a girl. And [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] – suddenly [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] has become perfect, but I can’t help thinking that an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] next to a [name_f]Ferelith[/name_f] or a [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] would feel a bit… plain. I don’t mind names not “going together” but I don’t think I can have sisters named [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], Twelfty, [name_u]Tobie[/name_u], & [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] :sob:

I wish I wasn’t so undecisive jk  :joy: ! I wish my favourite 3 names at the moment worked better together - [name_f]Freya[/name_f] [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] “Raya”, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] “Rory” and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] “Indy”. I feel like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] work well because they are trendy, modern and popular in the UK (but work well in my 2nd language and aren’t as popular there, and you wouldn’t be very likely to run into them in my area) and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] work well together because they both have scandinavian roots but there is someting as a whole that makes some people question this trio even though I like it :hibiscus: :ballet_shoes: :sparkling_heart:

I mean if it help [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], while it has multiple origins, does have well established roots in Scandinavia and it quite popular in Norway and Finland (which is technically a Nordic country not Scandinavian but I’m still gonna include it)

adding onto what @leafygreens said, there’s also the [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] Borealis (northern lights) that are commonly found in Scandinavian/Nordic countries. And the Norwegian singer AURORA.

Where I am, [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] is very much a grandma name so it doesn’t really fit with the other two in my mind, however, that may not apply to where you live.

Never met another [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] in my life in both my country of origin (speak the language and am heavily influenced by its culture even though I don’t live there so its important to me to sound good in the language especially as I’d want the people there to pronounce it well) or in my country of residence so I can’t speak on the name associations as the only ones I have are a girl from a tv singing talent show (yes I used to be that X-Factor , Got [name_m]Talent[/name_m] and the list goes on kind of fangirl), the youtuber (I’ve heard of her but never watched them) and other 2-3 people in the entertainment business (which are all positive in my mind)
