Name Rants

Which, to be fair, the Teletubbies were kind of creepy. I’m a ‘00s child, albeit a later one, but I was freaked out by every single one except for the red one. Not sure what it was about the red one…

Hmm, I don’t know… that one looks like it might have a dark side as well

I definitely thought of the sun from Teletubbies!

Probably :grimacing:

oh, i’m absolutely with you on the moon! the sun isn’t too bad for me but the moon ones are genuinely terrifying. i think it’s because the sun has a neutral expression, but these guys… :full_moon_with_face: :first_quarter_moon_with_face: :last_quarter_moon_with_face: :new_moon_with_face: why the smile? what are you hiding?

I sometimes get mildly frustrated by the lack of any discernible logic in my name preferences. Like, I’ll love one name and really dislike another when they’re almost… the same… name? The first example that sprung to mind was [name_f]Helena[/name_f] (HE-le-nuh), which I love, and Eleanor/Elinor/Elena (EH-le-nuh), which I… don’t. But the difference in pronunciation is only one letter! Same with [name_f]Eva[/name_f] pronounced EE-vuh and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] pronounced like [name_f]Ava[/name_f]: the difference in how they sound is in in no way proportionate to the difference in how much I like the name. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is another one: neither are my favourite but I like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] so much more; I guess the ‘x’ sound is stronger than the ‘s’ but surely it’s not that big of a difference?!

Ugh I feel you on the [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] / [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] thing, I love [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and my partner loves [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], but neither of us really like the other name that much :sob:

[name_f]My[/name_f] rant of course is about [name_f]Jewel[/name_f] !!

Summary

It is definitely one of my favorite names that is sooo underrated imo! I get the associations people don’t like, the e-cig and the singer but both are so incredibly irrelevant in my life :joy: I find this name to be so usable, it fits perfectly with the rubys and opals that are popular now, it has that “oo” sound that is super pleasant, it’s recognizable, old-fashioned, not fussy… I’d name my daughter this in a second, but I fear negative reactions from everyone :sob:

Not me thinking of using that very emoji for an upcoming notd :joy:

To me it’s like, 90s sun moon and stars vibes

if it means anything, i know a jules and she’s never gotten any “juul” comments! & i also don’t know the singer you’re talking about

@seawillow I just feel like the juul thing eventually isn’t going to be relevant! Maybe that’s just wishful thinking though. [name_f]Treasure[/name_f] is beautiful! I’ve never thought about that as a name :two_hearts:

@tallemaja that definitely means something! Thank you!!

@shorie I’m next door to the town the singer is from, so I think I’d feel like I was naming a daughter “after” her; but that said, it’s not entirely a negative association here. Some people like [name_f]Jewel[/name_f] and her family and the associated reality TV show, some people don’t :woman_shrugging:

ETA if you haven’t looked her family up at all, you might want to, for the names. There are a lot of really cool names in the family.

Why all my girl names have to have new adds, cut off old things and change so much so quickly all the time?

And my boy favourite are just those FEW, still there since years and years?

I hate when people tell others that they CAN’T use a name because of one association or something similar, particularly when it’s not even a super well known association (which weirdly enough seems to be the case most of the time I see people do this). Except in cases where it’s pretty much universally agreed that a name is off limits or there’s a very clear, specific reason why it shouldn’t be used outside a certain culture, it’s never really cut and dry whether a name is usable or not and even if you strongly disagree with somebody’s choice to use it, you don’t have the right to tell them they aren’t allowed to do it. It’s always helpful to let people know about potential associations with names they’re considering that they might not know about, but it’s still their choice whether it’s an association they’re willing to put up with.

I guess the issue here is that it’s mostly the child that has to put up with it, rather than the parents who are deciding to use it. I agree with most of what you said though, but I think it’s always important to consider that the name you give someone is theirs to live with, not your own. Some parents seem to forget that.

I 100% agree, I just find it irritating when people act like they have the final say about whether a name is usable or not in cases where it’s very subjective. I guess I probably should have worded it as “overlook” rather than”put up with”, since as you said it’s the child who will bear the brunt of any issues that may come up.

But isn’t that kinda wonderful? If you were constantly discovering new loves all the time you’d be driven mad by not being able to use even a fraction of them. Knowing your favourites and not having them swayed by fresh options is actually beautiful imho
