[name_m]Just[/name_m] have to get this off my chest: I love the name [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] on paper but it just feels all wrong when I say it out loud. I like hearing other people say it, I love the meaning, I like the [name_f]Disney[/name_f] reference, and it’s just a beautiful name in general. But when I say it, it just sounds wrong! It just doesn’t flow the way I want it to. I love when other people use the name. Looks like a baby [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is not for me.
When a name that has been a long time favourite of yours but not much talked about by others starts to suddenly gain traction on the forums and you’re like wait that one’s mine
every time you see it, even though you know that’s a completely unreasonable reaction…
(The sudden possessive feelings probably mean the name should go on the short list
)
In a similar situation! I am actively trying to like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] because it’s the only name my bf has mentioned liking I would ever in a billion years consider, but it’s not going well so far
Ooh, I hope you come around to [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]! I love her ![]()
Me too!
I sadly don’t think I’ll ever like her, but I compromised by letting him name our Stardew [name_f]Valley[/name_f] horse [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], so hopefully that’ll be the end of it ![]()
I feel this so hard, it’s happened to me so many times ![]()
this is my side-eye emoji ![]()
A bit of a happy rant today.
I really like how the IFSC’s (international federation of sport climbing) main commentator pronounces the athletes names how they would be pronounced in the country they are from rather than [name_f]English[/name_f] (he is American).
For example instead of saying [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] the [name_f]English[/name_f] way he pronounces it the Italian way because [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is from [name_f]Italy[/name_f]. And I’ve heard him saying on air that he’ll check if an athlete likes to be called a certain nickname or something like that.
It’s such an easy thing to just ask how to pronounce someone’s name how they’d like but I rarely see people doing it.
I completely agree with this. Where I work we see a fair amount of patients with foreign roots or more unusual names. I always ask them how their name’s pronounced or if I’m pronouncing it correctly, and you can always see their face light up a little when I do. It’s such a small effort, but a huge sign of respect. And I hate that many of my co-workers don’t bother.
Am I the only one that notices the LAV in [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] and [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] is rather unfortunate? I know we don’t use the word lavatory a lot for the toilet, but it’s still there. They are beautiful names, don’t get me wrong, but I would never want to name a child with either because of this.
I have literally never even noticed there is “lav” in [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
I feel that so hard with [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] (and Laverne). Oddly enough it’s only that one, with [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] I didn’t even notice
I hate trying to find middle names with a burning passion
I have a bunch chosen for boys but girls? ugh.
Yes to this! I work with hundreds of students and many of them are international or come from international families and have uncommon names in [name_u]America[/name_u]. I always ask for the correct pronunciation and any preferred nicknames, and make a conscious effort to remember even if it’s difficult or unfamiliar, and they really appreciate the effort.
yes i always see people arguing against creative and/or modern spellings of names/the names themselves bc it’s “mean to people to expect them to pronounce mackenzaleighsgshdhdh” but like, if i met a kid named mackenzaleighsgshdhdh i would of course learn to pronounce their name, because it’s basic respect and also… imagine if you replaced a modern name with a name form a different culture in that sentence. it has uncomfortable implications
I’ve liked the name [name_f]Brandi[/name_f] for a long time but alcohol associations have always been one of my biggest “absolutely nots” when it comes to baby names. So why am I now crushing on the name [name_f]Sherri[/name_f] too ![]()
I hate having such a varying style of names; it makes dreaming so hard! Because, on one hand, here are my daughters [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]. In the other, my sweet girls [name_f]Nadezhda[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucilla[/name_f]. But of course, who could forget about [name_f]Luciana[/name_f] and [name_f]Marcella[/name_f]?
Actually, I think all I’ve gathered from this is that I love “Lucy names” ![]()
I love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] names too ![]()
I wish I could like the name [name_f]Luna[/name_f], but every time I hear it, my brain thinks ‘lunatic’. I also get concerned that people would call her ‘lune’ for short. [name_f]Looney[/name_f] tunes, looney, lunatic. Not the best associations, I think.
That is me with the name [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
She is really cute, but whenever I see/hear her all I can think is “whinny” like the sound a horse makes
