Haha, that makes more sense! Don’t worry, you’re not the only one - NB deletes my edits and then gaslights me about their existence all the time recently!:sob:

NB when I ask where my edit went

Sometimes when people write out pronunciations of mythological names I think “wow that’s so wrong” before remembering that the pronunciation I was taught is probably wrong as well. The english way to say [name_m]Thor[/name_m] for example is certainly closer to the original than the “Tohr” I use! At this point I’m kind of afraid to ask what [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] is supposed to sound like, being so vastly different in [name_m]German[/name_m] vs [name_f]English[/name_f]!

ooh i’m curious now, how would you say it in german? zeh-oos or something like that?

it doesn’t actually exist in greek, we call the god Dias/Thias

i feel you on this one, i took ancient greek in high school but that only made things worse! i don’t even know how i would write the dutch pronunciation of zeus phonetically for an english speaker (do they have an eu sound the way we do?? best i can think of is zuys?)

one syllable, “Tsoyz” wow that looks awkward

Honestly, that just looks like a cre8ive name to me at this point.

Falling in love with a name for a future child, THEN realizing it doesn’t work for your family is the worst!

Summary

Husband and I were really loving Emmeline (emm-eh-leen pronunciation) for the baby we’re expecting and loving the idea of calling her Emmy and Em sometimes, plus I saw that it was ranked #945 last year. Oh, and it could honor an important Emma in our lives. All was lining up perfectly for this name, then my husband put it with our last name and we realized the last syllable rhymes with our one-syllable last name :sob: Why??

I’m so aggravated that traditional boy names have crossed to the girl side. SO MANY of my favorites have gone that way … [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], Darcy… I’ll let my children be whatever they would like, but I should hope they aren’t misgendered right off the bat at birth. I’d hate for a sort of identity crisis to occur at a young age or something… let them decide when they’re older. Until then, my favorites will be seen in [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] and [name_u]Daniel[/name_u] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] [name_u]Wilder[/name_u] :sob:

I learned today that my cousin (whose middle name is Mae) was named after our great-great grandmother (Florence May), and I’m :smiling_face_with_tear:
I love [name_f]May[/name_f] as much as the next person—maybe even more, I freaking love it—but… to get so close to perfect, glorious, meadow-gem [name_u]Florence[/name_u] and not use it for the honor??? How!?

Realistically, I agree that this may be too much to wear. Gah!
But also… Emmeline Ke.en? Emmeline Be.an? Emmeline Gree.en? I love them all, and I think they are absolutely fierce youth heroine-esque! :star_struck:

Haha very true! That does sound bookish and heroine-like! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! Maybe we’ll have to use it for a middle name because it just seems too good to pass up haha

[name_f]Do[/name_f] I love the name [name_u]Montgomery[/name_u], or is my ADHD hyperfixation on [name_u]Montgomery[/name_u] [name_m]Clift[/name_m] taking over?:face_with_raised_eyebrow::bowing_woman:

This isn’t so much a name rant as a name-related rant, but still feels relevant

The smiling sun face emoji (:sun_with_face:) absolutely terrifies me. I don’t even see people using it that much, it just feels like it’s in every single post with :sparkles: aesthetic :sparkles: emojis for a name. I’ve even started having nightmares featuring smiling sun faces named things like [name_u]Josie[/name_u] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_f]Nell[/name_f].

Goodness! That is frightening… Especially in a nightmare :flushed:

The android one is much less creepy

Which, to be fair, the Teletubbies were kind of creepy. I’m a ‘00s child, albeit a later one, but I was freaked out by every single one except for the red one. Not sure what it was about the red one…

Hmm, I don’t know… that one looks like it might have a dark side as well
