Name Rants

I’m starting to like boys names on girls, will it be weird if half my girls have “girly” names and half have “boy” names??? (assuming I even have girls lol, I’m way ahead of myself)

also, why are there so many “of the day” threads? I feel like I don’t see any other threads because there’s so many lol

@auroracallista Right there with you on both of those posts! I just love the names [name_m]Kenny[/name_m] and [name_m]Luca[/name_m] for a girl at the moment haha

I feel like many of the “of the day” threads could be merged into like, maximum 3-4 threads :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Name of the day, GP of the day, combo of the day, sibset of the day – those are the big 4 that I would genuinely miss. Underrated notd, GP combo otd, GP sibset of the day – I do find myself using and liking them but I know they should probably be consolidated. Unless I’m forgetting something, most everything else is too much imho

[name_f]Love[/name_f] seeing people take Spanish names and give them a completely different pronunciation, meaning, and take away any cultural ties. I don’t know if it’s better when you say it’s Spanish and that you just know better than native speakers or when they claim to have “invented” the name……

This is obviously sarcasm and I know it happens to everyone, from Greek to African.

Some people have suggested giving it its own category, which I think would great. Other posts on the current category wouldn’t buried but the frequently commented on “of the day” posts. Hopefully they do something like that soon (hint hint mods )

While I can see why giving them their separate category might work better, it makes me wonder what [name_m]General[/name_m] name discussion would still be for in that case? Bandwagon posts are already separate, and there’s a different forum for name advice.

That category would definitely get a lot less traction for sure if the “of the day” posts were taken out. I think posts about names on general, groups of names, name trends, etc. would still fit within the general names category. I posted one there a few days ago about the many duplicate names on my husband’s extended family tree. I’m thinking things like that would be fun to see more of without getting lost

I swear, Boomers are more creative and mean with their name insults than any child has ever been! I told a family member about Chris Pratt’s new son, Ford, and she said: "oh, poor boy, he’s going to get teased all the time. They’ll call him “Chevy” or “Hyundai!”

(This is the same woman who said that Louise will be called “Wheezy” and that Elias will be teased because his name sounds like a Narnia character??)

This is all in jest, obviously, but still!

i was just thinking about this! it’s so ridiculous- whatever happened to “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything!”

i had a dear friend who had two names picked out for her little one— parker for a boy, and lennon for a girl. her grandmother kept commenting that people would call her son “porker parker” and that he would end up overweight— like, what??

and then she joked that lennon was too similar to lemon, though i think lemon is pretty sweet :lemon:

For real! I can’t stand it! Maybe kids were a lot meaner back in their day, but it’s wild what they come up with. They can be so mean

[name_f]My[/name_f] FIL is one that brings them up a lot too. I mentioned that my friend named her son [name_m]Miles[/name_m] and that I loved it, then he said that it’s an awful name to name your kid because he used to have a teacher who was overweight named Mr. [name_m]Miles[/name_m], and apparently they’d say something super mean about his body size in relation to his weight/waist size (that I don’t want to type out). He even chuckled like it was funny, which is disturbing :upside_down_face: How do people even come up with those kinds of things? Then he said [name_m]Carter[/name_m] is a bad name because it’s a last name, which is funny since his own name is the last name of the [name_m]Jason[/name_m] [name_m]Bourne[/name_m] actor, and he named his son that too, plus his other sons are @ustin and Ry@n, so both last names too :woman_shrugging:t3: Some people just love to hate on names, often not even thinking them through. I wonder what he thinks of my kids’ names, especially Elli$, which is definitely a surname name, and not common as a first name where I live  Thankfully he hasn’t said anything. And thankfully my husband takes after his wonderful mother instead of his dad.

Those people with that level of creativity can turn any name into a tease-able name

Why do girl’s names seem so inspiring and boy’s names feel so stale to me???

I dreamt that I had the baby and it was a girl but I didn’t name her? And then when I thought I should pick a name I just had the same inconclusive thoughts that I have while awake!? So much for the big epiphany…

[name_f]Every[/name_f] time I have named a baby in a dream (twice) the names I chose in the dreams were names that I don’t even like, [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f] and [name_f]Raylyn[/name_f].

One of the things that always irks me is that I find so many names gorgeous, but since I’m not from that ethnicity it might seem inappropriate to name my child with that.
For reference, I’m kind of a mutt- white, Arab, and a bit Latina, but I look mostly white (although once I clarify that I’m Arab, most people see it). But I love names like [name_f]Consuelo[/name_f], [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f], [name_m]Tiago[/name_m], [name_f]Emiliana[/name_f], [name_f]Kamiko[/name_f], [name_f]Zuri[/name_f], [name_m]Samir[/name_m], and a bunch of other names from all over the world. Also, even if I marry someone who is one of those ethnicities, if our kids don’t look like they’re of that ethnicity, they could face bullying. I just wish naming children was less constricted.
