Warning for aforementioned teen parenting and fake friends.
Reuben Tyrone Blakesley (25) is Emily’s co-worker. However, he is a handwriting analyst rather than a polygraph examiner. His family jokes that he’s made a 180⁰ on his life - he used to be that student who faked his parent’s signature when his teacher made him send notes to his parents. Reuben himself understands family dynamics - he’s in a blended family. He has one older brother and two stepsisters, Allie Vickery and Allie’s younger sister. He knows the irony of his stepsister Allie dating Emma, a TA at Sophie’s preschool, but he’s completely supportive of the couple and knows they’re meant for each other. Reuben himself feels like there’s something missing in his life. He’s not sure if it’s love; yes he’s single but love isn’t his “big dream in the grand scheme of things.” He doesn’t believe it’s a family love, given his good bonds with his family or a good career, since he’s already proud of his job. In all honesty, he wants friendship. Growing up, he’s had people he thought were friends, but they were truly fakes and kicked him to the curb when a better opportunity arose for them. Reuben didn’t even want to be “the first choice”, he just wanted to be a choice, not just someone people settle with and then throw out, which was the vibe he got.
Reuben had some tensions with Luke as teenagers. At first, the two were “interest buddies”, a term Reuben uses to feel about their bond now. They weren’t really close friends and bonded on interests only. One of those interests was Platinum Hooks, an obscure band that he and Luke were huge fans of, but nobody else in the school knew about. So finding out a fellow person who was also a huge fan felt awesome to one another and it was liberating to have long conversations about that. In addition, both were fans of obscure hard-to-spell words. This was because of the high school’s annual Spelling Bee. There were other students who signed up but Reuben and Luke were the only ones passionate to win. To everyone else, “nobody over the age of 12 cares about spelling bees” and the other participants did it because the prize was a day off school, a picture in the yearbook, and a free pass from doing any homework assignment. At the spelling bee, it was a close game with several rounds of just Reuben and Luke against one another, but in the end, Luke won. Reuben was happy for Luke but wished he had won. Oh well, he can try to win next year. The next week, Luke had Friday off and he spent it in the way Reuben wished he could spend it - meeting the members of Platinum Hooks! Luke saw a free meet-and-greet at the mall to see said band… meanwhile Reuben was stuck at school having a less-than-stellar time. At this point, he was definitely envious of Luke but kept it together - it’s not Luke’s fault things were going well for him. Reuben was excited the next year when the next annual spelling bee was going on and joked with Luke about having that rematch. Luke stated, “Oh have fun; I’m not playing this year.” Reuben was dumbfounded: why wouldn’t Luke participate this year? Was it because of him? Was it because he started listening to those people who said they were “for 12-year-olds”? Did he just genuinely lose interest?
Actually all those guesses were wrong. It was actually because Luke had just learned his then-girlfriend Chelsea was pregnant! Luke had to dedicate so much time as a teen father-to-be that he didn’t have time to study for the spelling bee. A single day off from school and a free pass from one homework assignment wasn’t enough of a break for Luke to throw his hat into the ring. At this point, Luke and Reuben hardly hung out. Luke was focusing on his life with Chelsea and Reuben was feeling Luke really was more of that “interest buddy” than a friend. Luke wasn’t a bad person, Reuben just had a desperation for friends and their personalities didn’t connect in a friendly way. To add insult to injury, Reuben was runner-up again that year for the spelling bee, but he acknowledged it’s not him who has the short end of the stick. He wasn’t associated with Luke anymore but he felt Luke was a wonderful father to Luna and was selfless to keep his daughter. Secretly if it were Reuben instead of Luke, Reuben would have put Luna up for open adoption and focused on doing his schoolwork. Reuben never got his desire to find friends but he successfully got through high school and college and was proud to have graduated. Reuben and Luke attended different colleges and at that point, Reuben did find some people he could see as friends. He even found a potential best friend who he could bond with day after day, grateful for his skills and intelligence and never underestimating him. Reuben Blakesley never thought he’d hear about Luke Nathaniel again - that is until Reuben started working with Emily Cliff.
Unlike Emily, Reuben had no goal in reconnecting with Luke. What would he even accomplish, anyway? If Luke is still into obscure bands or obscure words? Reuben feels that didn’t matter and felt content with the friendships he had from college. He was so strayed away that he didn’t know Luke and Chelsea weren’t even together, Luke had two children with Emily, and Luke and Emily aren’t together either. Still, the more he overheard from Emily, the more he was interested. He knew Emily was close with Luna and that Emily did have two children, Sophie and Toby. It left him curious about so much: when did Luke and Chelsea break up? When did he start his relationship with Emily? Is he still in love with either woman? Wow, Luke really changed a lot. Reuben felt bad for not trying to be a better friend to Luke and worried maybe it was his own fault and envy that they weren’t true friends. But from how he was seeing Emily, he felt like maybe he sided more with her, given her responsible nature. Reuben had a serious job but he felt good that he didn’t have children and had more freedom. The people he met in college invited him to a party and he accepted, with his older brother joking, “Don’t get a girl knocked up,” having no idea the irony of that statement. Unlike Luke, Reuben ended up not getting anyone knocked up. And unlike Luke, the college buddies at the party had not changed since college parties. Many of them were acting reckless and some were genuinely rude people, but Reuben ignored that and wanted to see his best friend. However before he saw his best friend, he was intercepted by someone else at the party saying that Reuben’s best friend wrote a note that she didn’t want to be friends with him anymore. Reuben saw the note, which was an apology note followed by the statement, “I do not wish to be friends with you anymore. Please don’t talk to me again, Reuben Blakesley.” Reuben noticed right away that the statement was written by a different person trying to mimic the handwriting of the original apology writer. I guess Reuben could talk to his best friend again. Reuben approached his best friend and she immediately backed away from him. She knew he’d ask about the note but Reuben started off by asking, “Yes I read your note, but I know the bottom statement wasn’t you. But why the apology? You still want to be friends, don’t you?” She replied, “No, I’m sorry but I never felt that. The reason for the different writing was because I didn’t know how to state that I don’t want to lead you on, so I asked a friend of mine to do the last part for me.” Reuben asked, “Well your friend sounded rather harsh. So you want to end the friendship and I’m not being tricked right now?” She responded, “No, you misunderstood. I didn’t want to be friends with you and didn’t perceive you as a friend at all. I don’t know who would want to be your best friend but I tried to be nice to you because you were so nice to me. You really helped me get through college.” Feeling more and more miffed, Reuben asked, “I was never a friend to begin with? Just someone you needed to use to get yourself through college? All that credit you gave me for my work was just so you could keep having me around for nothing more than your own success I guess…goodbye…” Reuben walked out of the party in shame but not before grabbing the folded paper. He didn’t want his fraud “friend” to have the satisfaction of holding that note that proved the illegitimacy of the friendship. Although he never opened it. The woman he thought was his best friend didn’t even follow him, just continued on partying.
It feels like Reuben getting “served” by his fake friend was a piece of how he was meant to be. He’s had fake friends before and fake friends again. Also losing the spelling bee twice felt like a symbol of being used by his fake friends twice. He wasn’t even worried about how he was treated but more so what it meant to him. If he tries and doesn’t succeed…he shouldn’t try again because he’ll just fail again? Dang. The next day at work, Reuben and Emily saw each other again. Reuben looked irritable and lost in thought and Emily asked him if he’s alright. “Oh yeah, just tired from a party last night,” he replied with little confidence in his voice, despite technically not being wrong. He shifted the subject and asked if she’s doing good. Emily stated she was, but was having trouble reuniting with Luke. Reuben complimented Emily for her decision to reunite with Luke and told her she’s a strong woman no matter what the outcome is. Reuben respected Emily and had considered being her friend, but was worried this would end badly for him again. For now, it’s best he bides his time in fear of another failure.
