The decade started with tradgedy for the family as Solomon passed away from an infected wound he received working as a farmhand. This was especially difficult as without Solomon or Jack around, there was no one to support the family financially. When Augustina married Nicolas Wright, he moved into the family home and became the sole breadwinner. This was a struggle as he is also from a poor family and doesn’t earn much money as a tailor. Augustina and Nicolas have welcomed 2 children into the family; Miles and Violet. Both Augustina and Violet have been fighting Whooping Cough. Sephrona has also found love and is engaged to a shoemaker named Lewis McGrath. Although Patrick is only 16 he has been trying his best to work alongside Nicolas and Lewis to try and earn the family some extra money

Up until recently, [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] and Frances’ lives had been relatively quiet and calm. [name_f]Frances[/name_f] was pregnant with their 4th child together when she went into early labor and lost the baby. After a few hours of hemorrhaging, [name_f]Frances[/name_f] was pronounced dead as well. Theodore’s life, however, is going well so far. He started an apprenticeship when he was 16 with a printer, and, when he turned 20, he was able to start his own printshop. His business is thriving and so is his home life. Shortly after he started his business, he met and married Ms. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Hewes, the youngest daughter of a local farmer. They recently welcomed a daughter, [name_u]Florence[/name_u], named for his sister who died in infancy.

This decade bought more joy on the [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] farm. [name_f]Bess[/name_f] caught the eye of and became engaged to [name_m]Richard[/name_m] Bothwell, a middle class professor at a university. The family hope that she will have a comfortable marriage. Taking up the role as the family farmhand, with the view that he will inherit when the time comes, [name_u]Jack[/name_u] now works alongside his father. He also became engaged to [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_u]Finch[/name_u], the daughter of the local blacksmith and family friend. They are looking forward to the wedding although he recently contracted whooping cough. His younger brother [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] has since been filling in for him on the farm. With the farm in safe hands, for [name_u]William[/name_u] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], daughter [name_f]Alice[/name_f] has become the main concern as she recovered from her typhoid but is now sick with pneumonia.

Multiple grandchildren were born this decade for [name_f]Mary[/name_f], giving her a new purpose in life after the death of [name_u]George[/name_u]. [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] married [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] Scarry, the daughter of a carpenter who supplies the wood for his work as a joiner. They currently have three children, [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], although [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is presently sick with typhoid. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_u]John[/name_u] were married and welcomed two sons, [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m] and [name_u]Henry[/name_u]. [name_u]John[/name_u] Sr became sick with pneumonia after travelling for business. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] is forcing him to slow down and rest, fearing something serious will happen if he does not. Finally, there was happy news for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] who became engaged to [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] Marsham, the son of the local greengrocer, [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] Marsham & Sons. He hopes to take over the family business soon.

Not much changed this decade for the Auld family. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] became a pharmacist assistant in the shop, helping her father out along with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_u]Edward[/name_u] who do the deliveries. [name_u]Edward[/name_u] recovered from his typhoid, as did [name_u]Rose[/name_u] however she is now sick with scarlet fever.

Their only worry at the moment is [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] who has contracted scarlet fever whilst playing with his cousin, [name_u]Rose[/name_u] Auld.

Despite a leg amputation during the war, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] continues to have a thriving practice as a physician - he’s earned a name for himself in the care of veterans, particularly. He and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] continue to reside in Springfield with their children, though they travel to Peoria often to see her maternal family.

[name_f]Lillie[/name_f] has settled into life as an ‘old maid’ following the death of her beloved during the war. She lives with her sister Posey’s family and enjoys spoiling her nieces and nephews.

Following his return from the war, [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] married her childhood friend, [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] Deavour, who currently serves as a Lutheran reverend. The family likes to tease that it’s about time they had a religious man in the family, given the wide array of careers that have otherwise ‘married in’. They live in Peoria with their two sons.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f], after spending years helping get the family farm back up and running, has finally agreed to marry - her intended husband is the local blacksmith, recently widowed [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] [name_m]Haydon[/name_m], known for being a simple but good and kindhearted man.

He passed away at 25 following an almost ten year battle with tuberculosis. His niece, [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], is named for him.

Following the death of his first wife [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_m]Tom[/name_m] had no interest in remarrying. His daughters had other plans, however, and schemed to ensure that their father married [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] Tilley, the beautiful but abused daughter of a local drunken farmer, whom the girls knew from various meetings in town. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has settled into her new, wonderful life and constantly thanks the girls for allowing her to marry their father and have her own beautiful family. After three more daughters, [name_m]Tom[/name_m] jokes it’s his destiny to be surrounded by beautiful women.

It has been an extremely emotional 10 years for the family. Caroline and Julia both married, and Silas and Lydia were delighted to welcome their first grandchild. They celebrated more good news when they learned that Julia was pregnant, and eagerly waited to meet their second grandson. Tragically, neither Julia nor George survived the birth, and Julia’s husband passed away from pneumonia only a few weeks after.

When Caroline’s husband passed away from pneumonia during her second pregnancy, the family grieved his loss as well, devastated that he didn’t have the chance to meet his younger son. Worried for both Caroline and the baby after losing Julia, Silas and Lydia pleaded with her to stay with them for the remainder of the pregnancy. She obliged, and Charles’s birth was the blessing the family needed in such a difficult time.

Only a year later, Lydia became ill with pneumonia. Despite the family’s best efforts, she was unable to recover. After her death, Silas became overwhelmed with grief; Caroline decided to return home with her sons to help care for the farm and her family. Caroline, Abigail, and Simon have managed to run the farm together, but remain worried for their father.

In the last 10 years, the family faced an outbreak of Scarlet Fever, which claimed the lives of Bridget, Irene, and Ezra, leaving the children orphaned. Evelyn had always been very protective of Sarah and brought her to live with her and her growing family, while Cordelia asked to stay with Cyrus so she would be closer to her fiancée. When Evelyn’s husband and son became ill with diphtheria, Cordelia offered to stay with them and help treat their illness so Evelyn and her 6-month-old daughter could be safe from infection.

Although he loved her dearly, Cyrus’s relationship with his mother, Irene, had been strained since Irene remarried. He found himself feeling devastated and guilty when she passed away before he felt they had mended their relationship. Sadie, who adored Irene, assured Cyrus that there was no need for guilt and that Irene knew he loved her. They named their daughter after Irene when she was born.
