It’s 1904. The turn of a new century and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] has lived through it!
The was nothing but joy this decade for the Bothwell’s. [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] went to university to study medicine and while he was there he met [name_u]John[/name_u] “Archie” [name_m]Innes[/name_m]. On a weekend visit home, [name_m]Archie[/name_m] accompanied [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] and there he met [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] for the first time. It was love at first sight and they married just three months later. The have since welcomed a daughter, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and a son, [name_m]Donald[/name_m] into their lives.
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] on the other hand was introduced to the daughter of a work colleague, [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] [name_m]Ward[/name_m]. They married and had a daughter called [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f] met her husband, politician [name_u]Walter[/name_u] [name_m]Osborne[/name_m], at a friends house party. They also recently had a baby, a daughter called [name_f]Fay[/name_f].
[name_u]Cecil[/name_u] Bothwell became the recluse of the family. Like his brother, he too went to university only he was to study [name_f]English[/name_f] on recommendation of his father. He could never really cope with the study element however and chose to spend his days doing the thing he really loved… painting! At the end of just one term, [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and [name_f]Bess[/name_f] received the news that somehow [name_u]Cecil[/name_u] had made his way to [name_u]France[/name_u] instead of being at university like they thought he was. He was penniless and had developed a gambling problem. But it was there that he met the love of his life, [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Darling[/name_f], the daughter of a wealthy army [name_m]General[/name_m]. She was on holiday with her father and [name_u]Cecil[/name_u] got into a spot of bother. Emily’s father bailed him out and the family took him in. He is now back on the road to sorting himself out and has even been making some money from his artwork. He also started up his own textile’s company that Emily’s father has invested in and he and [name_f]Emily[/name_f] hope to be married soon.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is also to be married soon to [name_u]William[/name_u] “Sandy” [name_m]Gordon[/name_m], an [name_f]English[/name_f] teacher at a private all boys boarding school. Although [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] lives at the boarding school for the time being, he travels down every weekend to see her.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] worked her way up to a housemaid and fell in love with [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_m]Tomlinson[/name_m], a chauffeur also working in the same house as her. They recently married and are lucky enough that their employers are letting them live in a little flat above the garage and stables. They are saving up to buy a place of their own and away from life in service. [name_u]George[/name_u] hopes he will be able to go into the motorcar business.
When [name_f]Violet[/name_f] started working as a housemaid, [name_u]Florence[/name_u] went to work there as the replacement kitchen maid. She met [name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] on her day off and left her position nearly as soon as she had started it. They married and welcomed daughter [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]. However, there was sadness soon after when [name_f]Nora[/name_f] died of consumption. [name_u]Florence[/name_u] was pregnant with baby number two at the time and when she gave birth to another baby girl, she named her [name_f]Nora[/name_f] after her mother.
The [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] farm entered the new century in a strong position. Despite [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] getting sick with pneumonia, [name_u]Tommy[/name_u] and his new wife [name_f]Nell[/name_f] have been working doubly hard to help. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] also gave birth to a son called [name_u]Joe[/name_u] this decade and [name_f]Martha[/name_f] got engaged to [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Dutton[/name_u] who works at the village train station as a station porter.
[name_m]Fred[/name_m] Gregson did not remarry after the death of his wife. Fifteen year old [name_f]Alice[/name_f] moved out of the farm and back in with him to look after the flat he rents. [name_m]Son[/name_m], [name_m]Frank[/name_m], decided to go out to look for work. He did not want to learn his father’s trade or work on the Dickinson’s farm and eventually found a place working as a delivery boy for the local butcher.
The Fleury’s just keep on expanding their business and family! Eldest sons [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m] are now working full time with their father and they both got married this decade. [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] to [name_f]Irma[/name_f] [name_m]Albrecht[/name_m], the German/French born daughter of a clock maker, and [name_m]Victor[/name_m] to [name_f]Eugénie[/name_f] Rosier who is the daughter of a [name_u]French[/name_u] bookseller. [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] and [name_f]Irma[/name_f] also gave [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] their first two grandchildren, [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_u]Maurice[/name_u]. Things could not be better!

[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] Tugwell’s carpentry job did not last long unfortunately and he was forced to join Cora’s father down the mine. He is now a coal miner. On the plus side, he and [name_f]Cora[/name_f] did get married this decade and their are now the proud parents of [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_m]Bernard[/name_m].
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] Tugwell is still continuing with her laundry venture. It has been a great success and the extra money coming in helps. She married [name_u]Charles[/name_u] [name_m]Latham[/name_m], a factory worker, and gave birth to a son called [name_u]Walter[/name_u].
[name_u]Sidney[/name_u] Tugwell succeeded in his job search. He met a joiner friend of his father’s who decided to train him up as his apprentice. [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] now works as an experienced joiner. He also married [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_m]Clements[/name_m], the daughter of an ironmonger, and she has just given birth to their first son, [name_u]Robert[/name_u].
It was all marriage and babies for the Renshaw clan this decade! [name_u]John[/name_u] Renshaw [name_m]Jr[/name_m] and [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] welcomed three daughters named [name_f]Alethea[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_u]Lennox[/name_u] had five children… [name_m]Gordon[/name_m], [name_f]Susan[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_u]Rose[/name_u]. [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] Renshaw married clergyman, [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Craven[/name_m] and had a son called [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Twins, [name_u]Charles[/name_u] and [name_u]William[/name_u], were the exception however. Neither of them married but they were drafted into their father’s company as soon as they turned eighteen. For now, they are concentrating on learning the business.
For Marsham and Sons, [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] Marsham continued to work full time in his shop only now he works alongside his sons, [name_u]Robert[/name_u] and [name_u]George[/name_u]. Meanwhile, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has enjoyed being a grandma! [name_f]Alice[/name_f] Marsham married [name_u]Edward[/name_u] and gave birth to two children [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Ann[/name_f]. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Marsham became engaged to the village teacher, [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] [name_u]Wilson[/name_u], and [name_u]Robert[/name_u] Marsham married [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m], the daughter of a farmer who does business with the shop.

Sadly, at the age of 76, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] Auld died after a fall in his shop. There was some uncertainty as to what would happen to the shop but it has now passed into the hands of grandson, [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]. He married [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Eastman[/name_m] and they recently had a daughter, [name_f]Emily[/name_f].
Before her marriage to timber merchant, [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_m]Castle[/name_m], [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_m]Lyles[/name_m] started writing and illustrating her own children’s books. She continues to write under the name [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Lyles[/name_m] and has given birth to a son, [name_u]William[/name_u]. Younger sister [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_m]Lyles[/name_m] decided to go into teaching like her father. She currently works at an all girls boarding school.
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_u]William[/name_u] and [name_f]Trudy[/name_f] Auld had two more children, [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_u]March[/name_u].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] Auld married [name_u]Henry[/name_u] [name_m]Carrick[/name_m] and was able to give her son [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] a brother and sister called [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f].
There was joy for the Hardcastle’s when [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] married the famous industrial tycoon, [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Livingston[/name_u]. Known for owning Livingstons & Co., department store for the rich and well-to-do, [name_u]John[/name_u] is quite the catch. They recently welcomed their first child, a son, [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m].

It was another optimistic decade for the [name_m]Pyke[/name_m] siblings. [name_f]Ada[/name_f] gave birth to two more daughters, [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Thora[/name_f], and [name_u]Francis[/name_u] recovered from his pneumonia. He is enjoying being back at work as the village’s favourite postman.
[name_u]Walter[/name_u] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] were married and had [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_u]Harry[/name_u], [name_m]Frank[/name_m], [name_u]Florence[/name_u] and [name_f]May[/name_f]. Six children, including a set of twins! [name_u]Walter[/name_u] doesn’t earn much as a coal miner but they saved up enough money to buy the cottage next to Mabel’s parents. Whilst [name_u]Walter[/name_u] goes out to work with Mabel’s father, Mabel’s mother has been helping with the grandchildren.
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m] and [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] were also married this decade and [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] gave birth three daughters, [name_f]Ethel[/name_f], [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] and [name_f]Hilda[/name_f].
