This decade saw the tragic deaths of the [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] family patriarch, [name_u]William[/name_u] and eldest son, [name_u]Jack[/name_u]. [name_u]William[/name_u] died from injuries sustained by an accident with a horse-drawn plough and [name_u]Jack[/name_u] succumbed to whooping cough.
On a happier note, [name_f]Bess[/name_f] married her fiancé [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and they welcomed four children, [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] and [name_u]Cecil[/name_u]. [name_f]Bess[/name_f], not contented to just sit at home with the children, began to write. With Richard’s help as a professor of literature, she is now a published and very successful author under the name of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Bothwell. Providing captivating novels to women across [name_u]England[/name_u], [name_u]America[/name_u] and beyond, she has become quite the celebrity.
Despite only being married to [name_u]Jack[/name_u] for five years, [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] became a widow. She continues to live on the farm with their two young daughters [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Florence[/name_u]. Grandmother [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] also lives in the farmhouse and has been helping.
With the death of his father and older brother, the farm has now passed into the hands of youngest son [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. He recently married [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “Daisy” Ruffner, the daughter of a tailor who has given him two children, [name_f]Martha[/name_f] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Unfortunately the farm continues to be in jeopardy as [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is sick with cephalitis and the future looks uncertain.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] recovered from her pneumonia, however it now looks as though it was actually tuberculosis that she was suffering from. In lighter news, she became engaged to wheelwright [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] ”Fred” Gregson.
The last wedding of the decade was [name_f]Aggie[/name_f]. She married [name_u]French[/name_u] baker [name_m]Albert[/name_m] Fleury and gave birth to two sons, [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. They live happily in the flat above the bakery.

For the Tugwell’s, it’s been a difficult time. Although [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] recovered from typhoid and is now healthy, [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] has whooping cough, and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] has tuberculosis. [name_f]Joy[/name_f] turned to heartbreak when [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] had a long and difficult labour with their fourth child [name_u]Sidney[/name_u]. He survived but [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] did not, dying in childbirth. Grandmother [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Tugwell has taken charge of the children.
It was an equally trying time for the Renshaw side of the family. They lost [name_u]Henry[/name_u] to diphtheria at aged just 8 years old and [name_u]John[/name_u] Sr is still suffering from pneumonia. There were some happy times however as [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] gave birth to four more children including a set of twins. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_u]Charles[/name_u] and [name_u]William[/name_u] complete the family.
Marsham and Sons greengrocers shop has thrived this decade. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] married [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] and gave birth to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_u]Robert[/name_u] and [name_u]George[/name_u]. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_u]George[/name_u] being named after their grandparents and having two sons to hand over the family business to has given [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] all the more reason to continue the success. After all, the shop has been in his family for three generations!

Much to [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] and Thomas’s delight, [name_f]Clara[/name_f] Auld was married this decade. She met [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_m]Lyles[/name_m], a teacher new to the town, when he came into her father’s shop asking for directions. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] was able to help him and now they are happily adjusting to life as newlyweds with a baby daughter called [name_f]Helen[/name_f].
There was equal celebration for son [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as his cousin’s husband, [name_m]Richard[/name_m] Bothwell, got him a place at university to study architecture. They hope he will work hard and make a name for himself.
Celebration turned to heartbreak when [name_u]Edward[/name_u] died of pneumonia barely two years after his marriage to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] Farr, the daughter or a doctor. She is now left to bring up their son, [name_m]Edwin[/name_m].
[name_u]Rose[/name_u] Auld however, now recovered from her scarlet fever, travelled to the city to visit her cousin [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] Renshaw and there she met the wealthy banker [name_u]Charles[/name_u] Hardcastle. They married and she is now enjoying life as a lady of leisure. A far cry away from helping out at her father’s pharmacy. She recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl called [name_f]Millicent[/name_f].

The decade saw happiness turn to tragedy for the [name_m]Pyke[/name_m] children, with the deaths of both of their parents. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] from consumption and [name_u]Henry[/name_u] finally succumbed to the injury he sustained from his time in the army. [name_f]Ada[/name_f] married the village postman, [name_u]Francis[/name_u] [name_u]Carter[/name_u] and she has taken over as [name_u]Walter[/name_u] and Ernest’s legal guardians. With their parents house let go of, and [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] now recovered from his scarlet fever, [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and her brothers hope to make a fresh start living in the next village with [name_u]Francis[/name_u].
